The area known as Wimmera covers the dryland farming area of central western Victoria. South of the Mallee region, covers the most north-westerly part of Victoria - collectively they are known as Wimmera Mallee. The Wimmera was named after an Aboriginal term meaning boomerang, throwing stick or spear thrower. The name Mallee is said to derive from an Aboriginal term for a species of scrubby eucalyptus.
There is no set route to follow, making it a great idea to organise a campervan rental from Melbourne.
Head north, where at every turn there's something new to discover. Create your own unique road trip by visiting some of Victoria's quirky western towns and wonders.
Best of all, in this region you can also wander around the incredible Victorian Silo Art Trail. It's an experience you won't find anywhere else in the world.
Which Silo Art Trail can I visit in my campervan hire from Melbourne?
The Silo Art Trail celebrates regional Victoria in a modern and accessible artistic context. Known as Australia's largest outdoor gallery. It features epic works of art painted on huge silos scattered across the region. Offering a glimpse into the true spirit of the Wimmera Mallee. The trail recognises and celebrates the people of the region through these large-scale murals painted on the grain silos by various artists.
The first silo to be painted with artwork was in the town of Brim in 2016. It attracted a lot of attention and visitors to the area and from there the idea of a trail was born. There are currently 11 painted silos and more are under construction and due to be added in the future. Find out more about the Silo Art Trail and where the silos are located.

What other places of interest are there to visit in the Wimmera Mallee region with your campervan hire from Melbourne?
There are so many gems to explore when you visit this region in a campervan hire from Melbourne. We'll share a few of our favourites here.
St Arnaud
Saint-Arnaud is a former gold mining town. It is known for its impressive historic streetscape of old pubs, shops and elegant two-storey buildings. This picturesque little town also has its own art trail! Local artist Kyle Torney has painted the walls of buildings throughout the town. These are images of legends and inhabitants of the town, past and present. One wall in the main street is a portrait of a woman. She grew up in St Arnaud and became a teacher who taught Kyle art in grade 12. Another nearby pays tribute to the efforts of local St Arnaud CFA volunteers with a member cradling a baby Koala rescued from a bushfire. There is also a painted silo located in St Arnaud depicting an image that relates to the golden history of St Arnaud.
Murtoa
Known for its remarkable history and thriving grain industry, Murtoa. They produced wheat, barley, chickpeas and lentils for our domestic market as well as for export. There are several attractions in this town that make up the Murtoa Museum precinct. The most interesting by far would have to be The Stick Shed. Originally built as a wartime emergency grain storage facility in 1941, this incredible Australian Heritage-listed structure has become a remarkable example of Australian ingenuity and the local farming community. Constructed from over 560 natural mountain ash poles and measuring 270 m in length, it is 19 m high and 60 m wide. It gives the impression of a large cathedral and is therefore often referred to as the 'Wimmera Cathedral'.
There are a number of spectacular Pink Salt Lakes to visit in north-west Victoria in your campervan hire. Pink Lake, which is simply called Pink Lake, is one of them where you can get a good view of the lake from the rest stop on the Western Highway, just north of Dimboola. Also, just north of the town of Sea Lake, you'll find Tyrell Lake. This is Victoria's largest inland salt lake, covering around 208km². In case you're wondering when is the best time to visit and see these lakes at their pinkest, which is usually in summer: the hotter and drier it is, the pinker the lakes will stay, so late summer really is the ideal time.
Want to know some of our favourite campsites in this region to park your motorhome hire?
Caravan Park St Arnaud is a small park in a quiet, elevated location overlooking the canton. It is close to the leisure reserve and a short walk from the town.
Murtoa Caravan Park is a great little park on the shores of Lake Marma, around which the town was designed, so it's within walking distance of everything the town has to offer. You can also walk around the lake and have the chance to see a beautiful sunset over the lake from your motorhome.
Beulah Caravan Park is another waterside park with great views and is a very peaceful place to stay. Beulah is a small town with just one convenience store and no pub, but a great little cafe has recently opened here serving delicious pizzas.
Hopetoun Mallee Bush Retreat is 50m from the town centre on the shore of Lake Lascelles and is a really lovely spot, but it's also very popular so can get very busy. Motorhome pitches available and excellent facilities, as well as free camping available around the perimeter of the lake.
